The murder trial of a now 20-year-old man, who stabbed a young fisherman in Dunmore East in 2018 has begun at the Central Criminal Court.
Dean Kerrie who was aged 17 at the time of the incident has pleaded 'not guilty' to murdering 25-year-old Jack Power on the 26th of July, 2018.
According to the Irish Times, during the opening of the prosecution's case yesterday, the prosecuting Counsel said the case arose out of the fatal stabbing of Mr Power in Dunmore East, on the Co Waterford coast.
Dean Kerrie (now 20) with an address at St Brigid's Square, Portarlington in Co Laois is accused of the murder of 25-year-old Jack Power at Shanakiel, Dunmore East.
Kerrie grew up in Dunmore East, where he lived with his mother in a housing estate. It was in this house, counsel said, where the accused fatally stabbed Mr Power at 3.30am .
The Irish Times reports that on the night of July 25, 2018, Jack Power had been socialising and ended up in a pub known as Butcher Power's, where he remained until 3am .
Mr Power went to his Volkswagen Polo car after he left the pub, and the prosecution barrister told the court he struck or collided with a pole on the road.
The court heard, Power subsequently made his way into the accused's house, where an altercation took place between him and Dean Kerrie.
Jack Power was subsequently stabbed in the chest with a knife. CPR was carried out on Mr Power but by the time emergency services arrived, he was lifeless.
The deceased was pronounced dead a short time after his arrival at University Hospital Waterford.
The opening day of the trial heard that the jury may have to consider the issue of self-defence.
The trial continues today before Ms Justice Eileen Creedon and a jury of eight men and four women. It is expected to last two weeks.
