Revisiting Mount Suir Apartments: Residents continue struggle with council

Residents at the Mount Suir apartment complex in Waterford City say issues have not been addressed.

Waterford City and County Council have committed to inspections of each apartment, while councillors have also requested a full report on various problems.

23-year-old Eleanor, who has 2 young children, is a resident in Block C with her husband, says the Council has failed to deliver upon its promises.

"They promised that there would be an inspection of each apartment done up here." she told Damien Tiernan on Déise Today, "Not one inspection has been done.

Previous complaints were submitted to the council and local councillors, but the issue remains.

Eleanor continued:" Nothing has been fixed and we are all left to suffer up here.

"We had to sign contracts about breaking rules and they have actually broken some of their own rules, and if we broke some of the rules, we would be out on the street.

Damage to belongings

Multiple images surfaced online from Eleanor in recent months, with a recent Tik Tok video gaining over 100K views showing damage to the married couple's belongings.

"We want somewhere where our children can be happy and healthy not where they are going to be sleeping on mattresses that are constantly mouldy,"Eleanor continued to say.

"I have to keep replacing them and my 5-month-old daughter was sleeping on a moldy mattress and I had two mattress protectors over it.

"It was all of the kid's toys, all of Sophia's toys in her bedroom, and the kid's mattresses.

"I am highlighting everything to get the word out there to show how we are left to live by the council.

"I had to throw one out and replace the whole crib because it was moldy.

"It is absolutely ridiculous how we are left up here and how we are treated.

"We are literally like nobody to them."

Response from Waterford City and County Council

Ivan Grimes, Director of Services with Responsibility for Housing, Community, and Emergency Services with Waterford City and County Council spoke to WLR in January to discuss the Mount Suir Apartments.

He says between the four weeks from the middle of December up to the end of last week, there was just one complaint lodged.

He added that the council is working with a roofing specialist and assessing options for putting in an additional level of roof cover in certain parts.

Tender documents are being prepared for that at the moment.
