Speed limits across the country will soon be reduced under new laws.
Irish drivers are being warned to obey new speed limits, coming into effect next week, with gardai enforcing fines of up to €1,000 and penalty points for those caught speeding.
The changes for rural local roads will mean that current 80-kilometer-per-hour limits will be dropped to 60-kilometer-per-hour.
Mairead from the city gave us her opinion on the matter.
"Speed limits being decreased is ridiculous. The outer ring road [in Waterford City] should be 100 kilometers per hour, as 80 kilometers per hour is too slow.
"People are breaking it all the time. It's money for jam for the Government."
Kelly from Ferrybank says other issues need to be addressed on our roads before the limits are decreased.
"I think people are still going to speed regardless of the speed limit, and I think people who are doing the 80-kilometers-per-hour speed limit are going to keep doing it or go even higher now that it has decreased.
"The potholes in Ferrybank are a joke, especially with the ongoing works with the North Quays".
However, Donna from the city says it's vital that the speed be reduced, as she has witnessed too many people lose their lives on Irish roads.
"There have been a lot of accidents on the roads in recent years and there are a lot of people dying. I'm only 28 and I have noticed a lot of deaths in my age group in recent years due to road traffic accidents".
