Body recovered in search for missing Waterford kayaker

A body has been recovered in the search for a missing kayaker off the coast of County Waterford.

A multi-agency search operation had been underway across the last day or so, after he failed to return to shore at an agreed time to An Rinn near Dungarvan.

The alarm was raised a short-time later.

The kayaker - a man believed to be in his 60s - left the Helvick Head area at 11.40am and had not been heard from or seen since.

Emergency teams ceased the search last night and resumed at 6am on Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson from the RNLI and the Irish Coast Guard has confirmed to WLR News that they are involved in a recovery operation off Stradbally Cove following the discovery of a body.

The search operation involved rescue teams from Ardmore, Bonmahon, Dunmore East, Tramore and Helvick as well as Rescue 117 and the LE Aoibhinn.

A Department of Transport spokesperson said wind and low-lying mist are making conditions challenging.
