Instances of vandalism in Waterford City's Millennium Plaza have been widely condemned.

Cobblestones in the plaza have been torn up, creating holes in the seating and standing areas.

Local Fianna Fail Councillor Eamon Quinlan has been angered by these repeated instances of anti-social behaviour, and he believes the sooner CCTV can be used as a deterrent, the better.

"The Millenium Plaza was a forgotten feature of Waterford City for many years but Covid restrictions drove home to a lot of people what a good resource it was. The Councils plans to enhance it with the recent coffee offering, as well as to link it into the Greenway as its official City Centre starting hub show the new lease of life the area will have going forward. It is therefore very disappointing to see the damage recently caused to it, where a sizeable number of cobble stone blocks were dug out of its surface. Many were then left loose lying around.

"It is now a public safety hazard that we will have to repair with taxpayers money. I am calling on Waterford City and County Council to now only ensure a full investigation is held into this anti social behaviour but also that steps such as CCTV is installed to ensure the Millennium Plaza's future isn't wrecked before it even starts."
