Met Éireann issue response after 'little' rainfall in Waterford following warning

Met Éireann has issued a response to WLR, following minimal rainfall after the issuing of a Status Yellow Thunderstorm warning for Waterford yesterday evening.

The warning was valid from 16:38 Sunday 11/08/2024 to 21:00 Sunday 11/08/2024.

WLR reached out to the Met Office for comment, after reports of little rainfall was detected across the county yesterday evening.

The office confirmed to WLR however, that no rainfall was recorded yesterday at their observation stations in the county.

"A status yellow thunderstorm warning was issued for a number of counties yesterday evening, with Waterford included from 16:38 to 21:00.

"Given the large amount of thunderstorm activity that occurred in County Cork yesterday and the uncertainty with regard to the track of the system, it was decided that a number of counties in Munster were also deserving of a warning.

"As per the Met Éireann website, status yellow thunderstorm warnings are issued when we expect lightning activity in a county, or heavy rainfall associated with a convective system.

"From analysis of the radar and satellite image sequences from that time period, a number of convective systems passed over Waterford, with lightning activity recorded along the coast of Waterford.

Met Éireann rainfall observation stations did not record any rainfall during that time period, however, due to the highly localised nature of thunderstorms, the weather in one point location can vary greatly from another within a county."
