Members of Waterford City Fire Service assisted in tackling a fire at a commercial unit in Wexford on Saturday.

The major industrial fire, which broke out at the Culcita Furniture and Garden Furniture manufacturing plant in New Ross, is being described as 'very serious.'

The alarm was raised shortly after 10.30am and was brought under control by approximately 2.30 that afternoon.

Two units of New Ross Fire Brigade, one from Wexford, two from Waterord, one from Enniscorthy, and one from Bunclody attended the scene.

Waterford City Fire Service say the blaze was 'handled defensively' throughout the day but were advising anyone living in the vicinity last night to make sure they kept their windows and doors closed until morning as a precautionary measure.

"The fire service were there through the night," according to the Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, George Lawlor, "dampening down the fire.

"It's thought the fire began in a machinery room within the buildings. There are three buildings involved and two are reported to be completely destroyed.

"But the actions of Wexford County Council's fire service really brought the blaze under control during that time, between 10.30am and 2.30pm."
