The new government is taking shape with the Cabinet being formed.

Waterford TD Mary Butler has been confirmed in the last few minutes as the government's new Chief Whip.

She will also have special responsibilities for Mental Health, however, Minister Butler will not have the power to vote at the table.

The role of the Government Chief Whip is to set the schedule of business to be taken in Dáil Éireann and to manage the government’s Legislation Programme through the House.

The Government Chief Whip tracks the progress of legislation by liaising with departments and the Attorney General’s Office.

The Portlaw native was first elected as a public representative when she gained a seat on Waterford City and County Council in the 2014 local elections in the Comeragh District.

She subsequently secured nomination to contest the general election in Waterford for the party in 2016 and was elected on the first count after topping the poll with 10,603 votes.

Cardiac care at the hospital has been one of the dominant issues during Mary Butler's political life.
