Waterford Green Party TD Marc O'Cathasaigh has officially lost his seat in the Dail.
It has proved to be a disastrous weekend for the party nationwide - as Junior Ministers Ossian Smith and Joe O'Brien have already lost their seat, while party leader Roderic O'Gorman also faces a battle to be re-elected.
Deputy O'Cathasaigh received just 3.1% of the first preference votes - a tally of 1,671. O'Cathasaigh said he is “questioning where they have gone wrong as a party”.
“It seems clear there’s very little I could have done in a local context,” he said.
He believes he has “accomplished a huge amount”.
“I’m extremely proud to have been involved in the last government,” he said.
He says “existential issues” have not gone away and he hopes the Green Party will be represented in the 34th Dail.
”The Green Party in government did the work but we failed to communicate the work,” he said.
He said the issue of Waterford Airport arose on many doorsteps.
“The Airport definitely damaged me. I stand by my position and we’ll see where it goes from here.”
