A man had to be resuscitated by Waterford Fire Service after a house fire last night.
Neighbours of a house in the Hillview area of the city alerted emergency services at 10pm, after hearing the smoke alarm.
Two crews were dispatched from Waterford Fire Station and by the time they arrived a few minutes later, smoke was coming from the house.
A number of members entered the house wearing breathing apparatus, where they found a man unresponsive.
He was pulled out of the building and first aid was administered at the scene, reviving him before he was transferred to an ambulance.
His condition is understood to be stable.
Gardaí were also alerted to the incident and they say the scene has been preserved for a technical examination today.
Once the man was transferred to hospital, the fire service continued to tackle the blaze and they were finished at the scene shortly after 11.30pm.
Chief Fire Officer, Niall Curtin, has paid tribute to the crew members for their quick action in rescuing and resuscitating the man.
And he says the incident highlights the importance of a working smoke alarm.
