At Mallow District Court on Tuesday, Inspector Tony O’Sullivan sought a two-week remand in the case. Defence solicitor Pat Horan said that his client consented to the remand. DPP directions are awaited in the case.

Judge Marie Keane remanded Mr Corcoran in custody until August 20th for DPP directions. He will also appear by video link on the next occasion.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Det Garda Cormac O’Bric. He said that when the single charge was formally put to the defendant at Midleton Garda Station at 2:18am on Sunday, Mr Corcoran replied: “No comment."

There was no application for bail in the case as bail cannot be granted at district court level when the charge is one of murder.

Mr Corcoran was represented in court by solicitor Eddie Burke. Mr Burke made an application that his client be given attention when he is in custody. Judge Philip O’Leary agreed to his request and said that Mr Corcoran would receive all necessary medical and or psychiatric assistance in Cork Prison.

Legal aid was granted in the case as Mr Corcoran is not in employment at this juncture.

Mr Corcoran was arrested on suspicion of murder last Friday. He was detained at Midleton Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Ms Walsh was pronounced dead at the apartment where she lived off Main Street in Midleton on Friday afternoon after emergency services attended at the scene shortly after 4pm.

Members of the fire brigade were also called to the flat as a section of the property was alight.

The scene was preserved for a technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. An incident room was established at Midleton Garda Station, and a senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation. A family liaison officer has also been assigned.

The body of Ms Walsh was taken to Cork University Hospital on Friday.

A postmortem examination was carried out on Saturday by Dr Yvonne McCarthy from the State Pathologist’s Office. The results of the postmortem were not released for operational reasons.
