Major Emergency declared at Wexford General Hospital

A Major Emergency has been declared at Wexford General Hospital (WGH) due to a fire in the Hospital today.

The Wexford Fire Service was notified shortly before 4pm.

The fire is now under control, however the Fire Service will have a presence at the hospital overnight as a precaution.

There is significant water damage to the building and, as a result, a full evacuation is currently underway.

No injuries or accidents to patients or staff have been reported and over 200 patients are being transferred to a number of different hospitals.

The National Ambulance Service are working with the hospital to treat patients and transport them to hospitals in Waterford, Kilkenny, Cork and Dublin.

University Hospital Waterford have also tweeted tonight (Wednesday) saying that they are under "unprecedented pressure" because of the incident in Wexford.

They are asking people to consider all other options before attending their Emergency Department.

Wexford hospital is coordinating with the relevant authorities regarding finding the location, cause of the fire and assessing the full damage.

Gardaí are asking the public not to come to the Hospital and to stay away from the area.

Anyone requiring Emergency Care in the Wexford region should attend their closest alternative Accident and Emergency service.

A helpline for patient’s families and their loved ones will be set up as soon as possible to deal with queries.
