The installation of EV charging points is not the responsibility of Waterford Council.
So says, Waterford Fine Gael councillor, Frank Quinlan.
"It's the responsibility of the council to maintain them and provide the areas for the charging points to be installed," he said.
It comes as the council announced last week that they would be installing 12 new fast EV charging points across the city and county this year.
But Councillor Quinlan says the private sector should be installing more chargers locally.
"We should have a rollout of more fast chargers in every single place that people gather like beaches, car parks, schools," he said.
Aside from installing them in public places, Councillor Quinlan touched on people having the chargers in their own homes.
It costs €1,200 to have one installed in your home, but you can claim €600 back.
"Unless the incentive is there, people are going to be slow to take up on the electric vehicles," Councillor Quinlan said.
Only 2% of people in Ireland have bought electric cars.
