Lismore: Historic day for Sinn Fein in West Waterford

It was a historic day for Sinn Fein in West Waterford, as they took a seat in the Lismore local electoral area for the first time since the 1920s.

Donnchadh Mulcahy was elected following a tight battle with Independent candidate Brian Buckley - joining sitting Labour Party councillor John Pratt and Fine Gael's Niamh O'Donovan on the local authority.

There was plenty of drama throughout the course of the weekend, with the battle for the third seat finely poised between Mulcahy, Buckley and Michael J. Walsh of Fianna Fail.

The poll was topped by Cllr. John Pratt of Labour - as was also the case in 2019, while Niamh O'Donovan maintained the Fine Gael seat in the locality - at the expense of the Deputy Mayor of Waterford City & County, Declan Doocey.

Cllr. Pratt and Cllr. O'Donovan were elected on Count 4, while Cllr. Mulcahy was elected on Count 6.
