The lack of investment at Bonmahon's waste water treatment has been called a 'disgrace' by a local councillor.
It comes as a recent report published by the Environmental Protection Agency, stated it was 'imperative' the current system is upgraded.
Despite issues with the current plant, Bonmahon was not included in Irish Water's latest capital investment plan.
Comeragh District Cllr Declan Clune told WLR News the existing plant has remained the same for half a decade:
"The existing system consists of three septic tanks and for almost 50 years there's been little or no improvement works there. If you look at how Bonmahon has grown over the last 20 years, never mind 50 years, the fact that there's been little or no investment tells its own story," he said.
Cllr Declan Clune went on to point out that the current water quality has led to beach closures at the seaside village.
"It's going to be at least 2025 before Bonmahon is even consider (for upgrade). Occasionally the beach closes as a result of the condition of the water, and it's not fair on the people that live there. It's simply not acceptable in this day and age," he said.
