Funding for the Waterford active travel plan in Kilmeaden and Dunhill plan has been withdrawn.

Funded by the department of transport and introduced by the council aimed at promoting alternative travel methods such as walking or cycling.

The proposed plan was to develop footpaths and further road safety measures in the Kilmeaden and Dunhill area.

Speaking to WLR News, Mayor John O'Leary expressed said it was a disappointment.

"I am majorly disappointed that the minister withdrew funding which was agreed originally for road safety measures to take place in Kilmeaden and Dunhill and

what that means is those areas that were meant to be covered will no longer be funded."

The money has been realigned to different areas in the county under the plan. Government officials advised that the benefit does not outweigh the cost according to the Mayor.

Under the plan, new road works and upgrades to footpaths would take place to promote the use of active travel in the forms of walking or cycling while making roads safer for all users.

He continued to say: "Safety is an issue for people in all parts of Waterford and I think withdrawing funding from rural areas such as Kilmeaden and Dunhill is a mistake and it could lead to safety issues."
