Former Shamrock Rovers midfielder Jack Byrne has completed a move to Cypriot side Apoel Nicosia, signing a two-year deal.

The Republic of Ireland international's deal with Apoel runs until the end of the 2022/2023 season.

Byrne's former international manager, Mick McCarthy, took over Apoel in November.

The former Ireland boss had made no secret of his interest in signing Byrne after the 24-year-old's contract with the League of Ireland champions came to an end.

Rovers had attempted to convince Byrne to re-sign but the former Manchester City star chose to link up with the man who gave him his international debut in 2019 instead.

Byrne will wear the number 29 jersey for Apoel after passing a medical, which was completed after a negative Covid-19 test.

“We welcome Jack Byrne to APOEL and wish him to celebrate titles and European successes with the blue and yellow,” a statement on the club's official website read.

When McCarthy took over, the 28-time Cypriot champions were in relegation form.

Their form has picked up slightly, but they still sit in 11th place in 14-team league so McCarthy will hope the signing of Byrne contributes to an improvement in form.
