The IPU have warned that buying prescribed medicines online can be deadly, and say that many prescriptions which are being purchased over the internet are fake.

Union President Daragh Connolly says if it an online offer looks too good to be true, it probably is.

"It's probably better to say that people are buying poisons online," he says. "When (the Health Products Regulatory Authority) capture the illegal things that are coming in through online purchases they found rat poison, lead paint extract, absolutely nothing other than chalk dust in some cases."

Daragh Connolly says that pharmacists have had the ability to prescribe generic medicines rather than branded products over the past four years, which has passed savings on to consumers.

He says people "should think of the value of their health rather than the few euro they might be saving" by making purchases online.
