There has been a 28% increase in burglaries across Waterford compared to this time last year.

That is according to statistics revealed by PhoneWatch Ireland.

The report outlined that there were 2,599 burglaries nationwide between January and March, a 36% increase compared to the same months in 2021.

The most common times for a break-in are between 5 and 11pm, with almost half of burglars gaining entry through the front and back door.

Tips to keep your home safe

Always ensure all doors and windows are locked, even if you are only going out for a short amount of time. A quarter of people leave their doors unlocked when leaving the house.

Ensuring your home is well lit will lead a burglar to believe that someone is at home.

If you have a home security alarm, make sure to turn it on.

Cut your lawn before going on holiday to make it look like it was freshly done and there is someone home.

Instead of leaving a spare key hidden outside, give one to your neighbour.
