House prices in Waterford rose by 7% in 2023

House prices in Waterford rose by 7% last year - which was almost twice the national average.

The average price of a house in Waterford now stands at €305,000.

The Irish Independent has released its 'How Much Is Your House Worth 2024' guide, which details housing trends in every county.

Irish Independent Property Editor, Mark Keenan, says Waterford has become one of the most desirable places to live in Ireland.

"Waterford prices are up 7% which is nearly twice the average increase of 4% that we've seen across the board", said Keenan. "That's come on the back of a really big improvement in Waterford City itself over many years."

"Waterford is going to be the European City of Christmas in 2024 - cafes and bars are buzzing and the North Quays are being redeveloped", he acknowledged. "The property market is very strong. There was a profound shortage of stock in the first quarter of last year. That has sort of gradually improved. It meant that all those interest rate hikes that we got didn't really dampen the market there."

In his findings, Keenan outlined that the demand is ever-increasing locally.

"The county area is still seeing an influx of people arriving from Dublin", he noted. "There are people looking for a better quality of life of course, and the acceptance of hybrid and remote working has provided a big boost here. People in Dublin are coming to buy houses particularly if they can by the sea. The semi-detached saw the largest increase in demand - again resulting from a lack of supply and not enough stuff being built."
