The historic bridge leading from Waterside into the former Gas Works is not owned by Waterford Council.
That's according to comments made at last night's meeting of the Metropolitan District Council.
The bridge was restored and reinstalled in 2017, only to close in November 2021 citing safety concerns.
Speaking on Déise Today, councillor Eamon Quinlan says councillors did not know that the bridge was owned by Bord Gais.
He says: "Pretty much everyone in the room did not know that it was not owned by the council. We have been discussing that bridge and council engineers have been running reports on the bridge and we ran the design of the bridge hence you would be under the impression that we control the bridge."
The bridge is a renowned landmark in the city and remains closed. Some confusion surrounded the ownership of the bridge, but at February's Metropolitan district council meeting, it was announced the bridge was not owned by the council.
Councillor Quinlan continued to say: "It turns out the bridge is actually owned by Bord Gais. The Waterside car park instead of being owned by Waterford City and County Council appears to be in the ownership of Bord Gais. Our infrastructure and roads team confirmed that they do not own it and will not be putting any investment money into the bridge to make it safe for the public."
