Heavy rain and snowfall in Waterford leads to road closures and flooding

Motorists in Waterford are being asked to avoid a number of roads across the county this afternoon.

Heavy rainfall has resulted in a number of routes being impassable, while snowfall has been reported in the West and Comeragh areas of Waterford.

A Status Yellow Rain Warning for the county was upgraded to Orange this afternoon, and Met Éireann says the Orange Rainfall Warning will continue until 9pm tonight.

A small river known as 'the brook' in Brookside in Passage East has burst its banks and residents have sandbags and flood protection measures in place but there are no reports of damage yet.

Waterford City and County Council and local Gardaí have advised drivers to avoid the following routes if possible due to flooding and snow accumulation.

  • Near JBs on R684 – Waterford to Dunmore East road.
  • Airport Road at Ballygarron, Co. Waterford
  • Near the Shrine on R685 – Tramore to Dunmore East Coast road
  •  R683 Passage Road at Knocknagappul
  • Ballybeg Junction from the old Waterford Crystal Site to the Claremont turn-off
  • Cork Road at Morris’s Builder Providers
  • Snowfall accumulation from Ballymacarbry to Clonmel - The road is treated with salt and passable, extreme caution advised.
  • Snowfall accumulation from Clonmel to Rathgormack - Currently being treated but please avoid if possible.
  • Snow accumulation on local roads in Clonmel / Ballymacarbry / Rathgormack  - Should be avoided and drive with extreme care.
  • Spot Flooding reported in Tramore at Lower Branch Road, Pickardstown, Riverdale Estate and Butlerstown.
  • Boatstrand side of Bunmahon village
  • Carroll's Cross Junction Kilmeaden/Portlaw
  • L7083 Powers the Pot Road is impassable due to heavy snowfall
  • L3060 Glendalough Road is impassable due to heavy snowfall
  • L4007 Dunhill Rd spot flooding
  • Knockanduff Rd flooded Tramore 
  • Spot Flooding on R675 Tramore Rd

Waterford City and County Council ground crews currently investigating the reported incidents of flooding and motorists are advised to take extreme caution for the duration of the day.
