The Haven Hotel is to undergo significant expansion with the news that permission has been granted to carry out works on the grounds of the Dunmore East premises.

Hotel management has confirmed to WLR that An Bord Pleanála has upheld the decision by Waterford City and County Council to allow the construction of an underground function room, basement bar and courtyard, and external courtyard.

It also allows for ESB works, and the extension of the marquee, which is currently on site, for 18 months.

It's hoped construction will begin late 2023, with a Spring 2024 opening.

Problems around the application by The Haven had been ongoing since 2019. Concerns had centered around the negative visual impact that it might have, as well as possible noise disturbance.

However, An Bord Pleanála has issued its decision advising that the development can go ahead.

Owner Paul Kelly has welcomed the news after what he says has been a lengthy wait:

"We are absolutely thrilled with the news! It has been a long and stressful process, and we are delighted we can finally start planning to start building in September/October 2023, with a scheduled opening in late spring 2024 - 60 years after my parents, Jean and the late John Kelly, first opened the doors."

He went on to thank the Haven Hotel's "thousands of supporters" without whom he says the upgrade would not be happening.

It's expected the works will bring jobs both in construction phase, and when the amenities are open to the public.

"It will also be a vital new facility for local groups and organisations. Dunmore East has exploded with new homes, but infrastructure and facilities have remained static. As a small community, we rely heavily on the tourism trade and the jobs that come with it. As the temporary marquee facility has already done, it will help ensure year-round business to Dunmore East,” Paul Kelly added.
