Parental responsibility is being highlighted ahead of Halloween celebrations tonight.
Operation Tombola is in operation by Gardaí to deal with the detection of fireworks and any instances of anti-social behaviour.
Speaking to WLR News, Conor Cleary, Sergeant in charge at Dungarvan Garda Station, outlined the role of parents.
"It's very important that parents and guardians are aware of where their kids are every night - but Halloween especially. It's not good enough that kids are out on the street and you don't know where they are - they're children. Again, they're causing the issues on the street - but if they're not out there, they can't cause any issues. There was an incident involving a firework which was lit. When the firework took off, it went through the open window of a neighbour's house, and it actually caused the curtains of the house to go on fire. Fire and emergency services were called out, it could have been very serious - all as a result of just one firework."
"The best advice is to call the guards straight away or call 999 - if it's a fire, the fire service will come out and the Gardai will also attend", explained Sgt. Cleary. "The best way is to prevent it before it even occurs and then not allow anything to happen. Should something happen, 999 is the number to ring - and emergency services will be on hand to deal with whatever they're faced with."
