Policing in Waterford is to be discussed in detail today. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris is to visit Waterford this afternoon for a meeting with the Policing Authority.

The Policing Authority oversees the performance of the Garda Síochána at an organisational level.

Speaking to WLR, CEO of the authority, Helen Hall, explains the services they provide.

"The Policing authority is an independent body whose job is to oversee how the Gards, and how they provide their service to the public. How we do that is we approve the plans that the garda commissioner makes for policing in the year and look in practice about how that plan is actually fulfilled with the questions put forward in public.

"We have had a team down in Waterford in preparation for this meeting. We have talked to communities around here, and we have also spoken to Garda staff and members about the challenges that they face because it's good to have both side's opinions.

"Topics that will be raised include how to respond to local policing challenges in Waterford, things like garda staffing, and planning for the future workforce as that has been in the public domain quite a lot over the previous few months."
