The GAA is being urged to consider the introduction of ice-hockey-style neck guards for hurling and camogie players to prevent serious laryngeal injuries.

That's according to an Irish Independent report this week.

Doctors from University Hospital Waterford and the RSCI have highlighted the cases of 21 players who sustained throat injuries after being hit with hurleys and sliotars between 2005 and 2021.

They said that although these types of injuries are uncommon, they can potentially be fatal and encouraged the GAA to introduce neck guards.

Former Limerick hurling player and manager Tom Ryan welcomes the recommendation.

"It would show that we have safety to the foremost in our games and in our participants, both hurling and camogie," he said.
