At least five people have been shot in a New York subway, according to police officials.
The incident occurred at around 8.30am at a station in the suburb of Brooklyn and it's thought two of the victims have been seriously injured.
It's understood a man in a gas mask and orange construction vest carried out an attack that may have also involved tossing a smoke canister on the platform to distract the crowd at rush hour.
However NBC reports that NYPD and senior law enforcement officials stress the investigation is preliminary.
The shooter was still at large an hour and a half after the incident at 36th Street and Fourth Avenue station in Sunset Park.
It's reported by US media that police have been searching subway tunnels for the attacker.
The extent of the other victims' injuries is not clear at this point.
Police believe the shooter acted alone.
