Tramore could have been set to see changes to the current pay and display system in place by Waterford City and County Council.

The current period for paid parking runs from June to September, with a possible extension being introduced.

If the proposed changes were to be introduced, two months would have been added from April extending the period by two months.

Speaking at this week's metropolitan district council meeting, councillor Lola O'Sullivan said it not only affects the people of Tramore.

She added: "Mayor am I correct in what I heard that we are looking at adding two months to Tramore, I am opposed to that. I think it is unfair that you constantly hit us in Tramore and I  don't entertain that at all. If you want to add additional parking or add extra revenue, Start looking at Ardmore and Dunmore and other locations."

More concerns were raised regarding locals who park on the promenade for short periods, particularly elderly people visiting Tramore for the day.

Councillor O'Sullivan continued to say: "It's not just the people of Tramore you are charging, it is the people of Waterford City and some of them are elderly and walk on the prom

in the morning, get a cup of coffee and they go home. You want to add an additional charge, I think it is unacceptable."

Response

Gabriel Hynes from the council's roads department responded saying that the charge will remain at €2.00 for the day.

He added:" To clarify the charge per day is the cheapest in the country, it is €2.00 per day or 0.50c per hour and the reason we are introducing the additional two months is

that Tramore has changed over the last number of years. In April and May, there are large numbers to Tramore and by providing the parking there and it ensures there are spaces for people on busy days."

The motion was unanimously dismissed and the proposed changes will not come into effect.
