Mayfield House in Portlaw, which has sold for €300,000, is expected to be transformed into a luxury hotel.

On its own social media, auctioneer Brophy Cusack said the ten bedroom mansion, which sits on over six acres, has been bought by one of the country’s largest hospitality companies. The company managed the sale this week with Bid X1.

Once considered one of the finest mansions in the country, the site has lain vacant for almost thirty years - sitting empty since 1994.

The mansion was designed by architect William Tinsley for the Malcomson family.

The house remains in the ownership of the Malcomson family, and it has previously served as the national headquarters for the Irish tannery industry.

The tannery and leather industry collapsed in 1985 and as a result, Mayfield House fell into dereliction.

The building was used as office spaces before being vacated for good in 1994.

Many of its original features were stripped for architectural salvage, and now all that remains of the once grand mansion is its four walls.
