The Health Minister says no decision has been made yet on an application for 150 more beds at University Hospital Waterford.
Stephen Donnelly was responding to questioning from Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson, David Cullinane, at a meeting of the Oireachtas Health Committee earlier today.
UHW made a submission for the new 150 bed unit April of 2022 and have appointed a Capital Projects Lead to progress the business case.
However, Minister Donnelly says it's still under consideration.
"I want to acknowledge Waterford's outstanding lobbying ability in terms of their own beds. It will be considered, is what I can say at this point. I know they are looking for more beds, there's a lot of hospitals around the country sre saying we'd love to get some of those."
A report is expected within two weeks on bed allocation across regions such as Wexford, Waterford, Kerry, and Limerick, all of whom have requested additional bed capacity.
