Waterford Council will consider proposals to sell off a section of land in Tramore to facilitate the building of the first ever crematorium in the county.
Horizon Burials have agreed a fee of €130,000 for the land.
Councillors will vote on the matter at a special meeting of the council later today.
Councillor Eamon Quinlan says there's a need for the service in Waterford.
"It has been very much commented upon that it's a lacking service across Waterford City and County that needed to be addressed," he said.
According to Eamon, there have been attempts to build a crematorium here in the past, but they have all failed.
He's hoping that when it comes to voting, all councillors will be on the same page.
"I'm hoping that all 32 will pass this as this is a very necessary facility for the people, not only of Waterford, but the South East," Councillor Quinlan said.
He added that it's unfair for families to have to travel to either Cork or Dublin following the funeral of a loved one.
If passed, the crematorium would be located at the Riverstown Business Park between Falconer's Funeral Home and St. Declan's Cemetery.
A memoriam wall and car park would also be included in the new facility.
