A local Councillor has called on Waterford City and County Council to provide a museum dedicated to famous travel writer, Dervla Murphy.

Labour's John Pratt brought forward the idea at this month's plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council.

Dervla Murphy was an Irish touring cyclist and author of travel books for more than 50 years.

She is best known for 'Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a bicycle' released in 1965.

Cllr Pratt says the history of the author in Lismore should be celebrated.

"Apparently a house in Lismore that Dervla Murphy lived in might be coming up for sale," he said.

Cllr Pratt says it is an 'opportunity' for the heritage town.

"She really is an iconic figure. So I'm asking that you give attention to that and won't let it slip through the net."

The Labour Councillor's suggestion was supported by Fine Gael Cllr Damien Geoghegan and Donnchadh Mulcahy of Sinn Féin.

"Dervla Murphy was one of the great travel writers of the 20th century. She was arguably Lismore's most famous full-time resident and I think it is something that's worth exploring." Cllr Geoghegan said.

"Lismore is a heritage town and I think we could be doing a lot more to bring more funding to West Waterford," Cllr Mulcahy added.
