Residents of a small inner city estate in Waterford are set to be consulted around a proposed decision to close the area to pedestrian footfall.

It comes as antisocial behaviour in the area of Spring Garden Alley continues to be an issue for residents.

In a bid to tackle bullying and harassment, a local councillor has called for a public vote to be taken on the issue.

Speaking at the Metropolitan sitting of Waterford Council, Cllr. Adam Wyse outlined the issues being experienced on a slipway linking Spring Garden Alley and Michael Street.

"There's very little Garda presence and I don't think that would even fix the issue because it's happening at different times of the night," he said.

Cllr Wyse highlighted the lack of lighting and cameras in the area and called for the council to commit to carrying out a "plebiscite among residents about whether or not the slipway should be closed".
