A West Waterford Councillor is urging drivers to take care when driving in Tallow Co. Waterford, saying a road in the town is being used "as a race track".
Councillor Mairead Tobin raised the issue in the most recent sitting of the Dungarvan/Lismore District Council meeting.
Tobin has made calls for a pedestrian crossing to be installed to curtail dangerous driving.
"They seem to think that Convent Street and the main street in Tallow is a race track," she announced to the chamber", and that they don't have to abide by any speeding restrictions in the town, so I am wondering if there is any possibility at all to get a pedestrian crossing in Tallow?"
Vulnerable road users
Cllr. Tobin says there are many vulnerable road users in the area including the elderly and children.
She continued."[There has been an increase] With the [number] of people using the healthcare center and needing to cross the road.
"Also, we have the library there, so [we have] a lot of more vulnerable people in our areas [including], our elderly and young children, that are using both the doctors and the library.
"They are crossing the road at [risk], and they seem to think that Convent Street and the main street in Tallow is a race track that they don't have to abide by any speed."
"We now have four doctors in operation in Tallow. We have an increased volume of cars and traffic due to the fact that practice has increased. It has increased because a doctor in the neighboring area has retired and they now have all of their patience. It is an accident waiting to happen on Convent Street."
