Cllr. Joe Kelly elected Metropolitan Mayor of Waterford

Cllr. Joe Kelly has been elected as the Metropolitan Mayor of Waterford.

He previously held mayoral roles in 2018 and 2021.

In a heartfelt address at City Hall, he thanked his wife Frances and their family for supporting him.

He also thanked the outgoing Metropolitan Mayor, former Cllr. Jody Power who lost his seat in the recent local elections. Cllr. Kelly also spoke fondly of former Cllr. Davy Daniels who was one of the longest serving councillors in Ireland.

Cllr. Kelly also addressed the issue of 24/7 cardiac care at UHW, as well as the North Quays development.

He defeated fellow Independent Councillor David Daniels and Sinn Féin Councillor Pat Fitzgerald, with the following results:

  • Cllr. Joe Kelly: 11 votes
  • Cllr. Pat Fitzgerald: 4 votes
  • Cllr. David Daniels: 3 votes

Cllr. Kelly was recently re-elected, serving as a councillor for over two decades.

Cllr. Frank Quinlan was elected as deputy Mayor of the Metropolitan district of Waterford. He was the sole nominee meaning he was elected without a vote.

He will hold the role for 12 months.
