Gardai in Dungarvan have made an arrest in connection with a spate of car thefts in West Waterford in recent weeks.

Incidents have occurred in the Ballinroad, Dungarvan and Portlaw areas in recent days while there have also been thefts in Tramore.

Sergeant Conor Cleary from Dungarvan Garda Station confirmed to WLR that an arrest has been made.

"We had a number of burglaries in the Ballinroad area in the last week, just since the start of the year really. Arrests have been made for these burglaries so Gardaí are pursuing these investigations. However in one of these incidents, a vehicle was taken from the property following the burglary. Now that vehicle has also been recovered since so Gardaí are appealing for residents in County Waterford as a whole to ensure that premises are secure at night. A simple request to just make sure your house is locked, make sure your doors are locked, front and rear doors, make sure your car keys are not accessible and that your car is locked also."

"Opportunists are just walking around through housing estates through the whole county and if they can find a house or a door unlocked - they'll take that opportunity. So a simple task of having good security lights, maybe sensor lights would be an option and a simple request to just keep the doors locked. It will prevent incidents occurring."
