Car rental prices in Ireland were as much as 75% higher than other European countries at the height of the tourist season in 2021.
An investigation of prices during August found tourists here are paying more than in a range of other destinations.
The cheapest small car available during that fortnight was a Volkswagen Polo costing €2704. While the cheapest family car available was a Nissan Qashquai costing €5464.
During the same two week period it was possible to rent a small car for 70% cheaper in Lisbon and Rome, while in Athens cars were 65% cheaper, and 58% cheaper in Barcelona.
The difference was more marked when it came to hiring family cars over a two week period; in this instance tourists could have saved thousands by renting a car in Europe over other countries
Failte Ireland has this week warned that car rental prices here are undermining Ireland’s reputation as a value-for-money destination.
