Convicted Waterford child abuser Bill Kenneally is to be called before an inquiry examining the State’s handling of complaints against him.
The Commission of Investigation examining the response of State authorities to allegations against him commenced public hearings this week.
On the second day, chairperson Mr Justice Michael White said that the commission intends to call the former sports coach for evidence before it concludes its hearings later this year.
The commission is examining allegations of collusion between An Garda Síochána, the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore, the former South Eastern Health Board, Basketball Ireland and unnamed 'political figures'.
It was formed following a campaign by survivors into the handling of their complaints against Kenneally.
Until this week, the commission conducted hearings in private. Mr Justice White said there are up to 15 witnesses still to be called.
72-year-old Kenneally is serving prison sentences totalling more than 18 years for abusing 15 boys on dates between 1979 and 1990.
