Waterford Independent TD Matt Shanahan has spoken publicly about the controversy which engulfed his campaign this week.

At the SETU count centre last night, Deputy Shanahan said political parties had contributed to a “pile on” in relation to the issue.

He said they weren’t as “outraged” by people being carted off to Cork but were “outraged” by “a light on a wall”.

Deputy Shanahan is currently in a battle for the fourth seat in the Waterford constituency with Sinn Fein Cllr Conor McGuinness.

He said the use of an illuminated election campaign ad on the side of the Dunmore Wing was used to highlight issues relating to UHW.

”The hospital has always been the battleground of my campaign,” he said.

“These things happen, it’s rare in any campaign that there isn’t a misstep.”

He said a party is “challenging for two seats in Waterford which doesn’t even have Waterford in its manifesto”.
