At least 100 cost-rental homes to be delivered in Waterford within 18 months

At least 100 cost-rental homes to be delivered in Waterford within 18 months

A Waterford senator says he refuses to buy into the idea that Waterford and South East are playing second fiddle to other regions.

John Cummins says people are failing to see all the progress that is being made in the city and county, with the help of considerable government funding.

Speaking to WLR, the Fine Gael senator says Waterford is not being left behind by government.

He says: "Frankly when I see the job creation that is being delivered by IDA and Enterprise Ireland in Waterford over the last decade, we have seen over a 50% growth in our city and county."

He continued, saying there is a narrative that people like to paint, however he says he chooses not to buy into it.

"When I see a Technological University being delivered, when I see the North Quays being commenced, let's look at what is being delivered."

Housing

Based on the projects underway, it is anticipated that more than 100 cost-rental units will be available in Waterford before the end of 2024.

In his capacity as Fine Gael's Housing Spokesperson and Waterford Senator, John Cummins says work on a number of projects is underway.

Cost-rental homes are secure, permanent rental accommodation for people who are over the threshold for social housing, but who aren't earning enough for a mortgage.

Rent in one of these homes would be at least 25% below market rent.

Speaking on Déise Today, Senator Cummins says details of the Waterford allocation will be confirmed in due course.

"What I can say is that there will be at least 100 cost-rental units, 2 and 3 bed units for individuals and families to rent within the next 18 months in Waterford. This is an excellent thing which will free up other rental stock in Waterford and people can live there for as long as they wish."

The exact details of the project have not been announced yet.
