Anger as ringbuoys thrown into St. John's River

A local councillor has raised concerns about the replacement of ringbuoys along a Waterford City river.

Councillor Joe Kelly claims that ringbuoys have been misplaced along John's River by the People's Park.

Speaking at the most recent Metropolitan meeting, he queried how this is monitored.

"I noticed a ringbuoy in the river, and one hidden under branches. I'm wondering if we have a programme whereby we regularly replace ones that are missing or damaged, a kind of replacement programme."

Cllr. Kelly quoted the phrase "A Stolen Ringbuoy is a stolen life."

He says "for the very silly and stupid people who take these and throw them in the river, it goes to show them what they are putting at risk."

Administrative Officer for Waterford Council, Honor Dunphy confirmed there are automatic sensors attached to the buoys which will notify the Council if removed.

A commitment to follow the matter up was made.
