Almost 80 people were officially registered as homeless in Waterford last month.

The figures from the Department of Housing for March show a new record for homelessness was set nationally.

Just under 12,000 people were accessing emergency accommodation during March of this year.

That marks an increase of 2.1% on February.

The figure includes just over 5,800 single adults, over 1,600 families, and almost 3,500 children.

In Waterford though, the figure of 78 people registered as homeless is unchanged from February and it's an increase of four people on March of 2022.

Overall for the South East, there are 225 people accessing homeless services, which is 21 less than the same month last year.

Nationally, the majority of homeless adults are in Dublin, at over 8,500 and there has been a year-on-year percentage increase of 22%.

However, these numbers do not take into account people sleeping rough, refugees, asylum seekers, or women in refuge centres.
