A number of firefighters from across County Waterford are setting off on a 50km walk and cycle this Saturday in a bid to raise funds for a young boy's mission to walk.

Patrick Morrissey from Cappoquin Fire Service, along with many of his colleagues, will set off from the Waterford City Fire Station on the Kilbarry Road at 9am, walking to the beginning of the Waterford Greenway at Carriganore where he will be joined by members of the Dungarvan Fire Service, before they get on their bikes and cycle to Dungarvan.

The firefighters will have their full kit and apparatus on them for the journey - which is all happening for Aaron's Mission to Walk. Aaron, 5, lives in Newry and is a cousin of Patrick Morrissey. Aaron's dad is also a firefighter.

Aaron was born with cerebral palsy and diplegia in his limbs. The group are trying to raise funds so that he can avail of surgery in the US to give him a chance at walking - or at the very least, to give Aaron a better quality of life.

Bucket collectors will be on site at various locations on the Greenway, in Dungarvan, Kilmacthomas, Abbeyside and Cappoquin this Saturday.

If you see those out with buckets, please donate whatever you can as all donations big or small are appreciated.

Aaron's fundraiser requires £105,000 - and £91,000 of this has already been raised.

Proceedings get underway from 9am Saturday and Patrick Morrissey from the Cappoquin Fire Service would like to thank everyone involved in organising the event, and those who have volunteered and donated.
