20 Waterford schools have taken part in a Farm Safety Ambassadors Programme in light of Farm Safety Week.
Farm Safety Week began on Monday and plays an important role in engaging, encouraging, and empowering children to become Farm Safety Ambassadors.
It helps to create a safer, brighter future on Irish farms.
The Safety Ambassador Programme is led by the Agri Aware Farm Safe Schools Programme and helps to improve farm safety in Munster by having 160 primary schools across the province carry the initiative.
“The Agri Aware Farm Safe Schools programme has had a real impact in just a short space of time in bringing the farm safety message home to the farm from the classroom," Alan Jagoe, Agri Aware Chairman, said.
Children are encouraging farmers and their families to have farm safety at the forefront of their minds as 21 children have died on Irish farms in the last decade.
The schoolchildren across Cork came out on top for the Farm Safety Ambassadors in Munster, with 57 schools having taken part. Pupils received practical advice on how to keep everyone safe on a farm.
Farming has the poorest safety record of any occupation in both Ireland and the UK. This week brings Ireland and the UK together to encourage farmers and farm workers to view health and safety as an integral part of their business.
