Waterford people are being invited to this year's Big Beach Clean after great success in the county last year.

In 2021, people across Waterford removed 500kg of litter from six different clean-up locations.

Tramore Tidy Towns and Tramore Eco Group hosted two successful beach cleans as part of the Vitamin Sea Festival.

Outside of Waterford, volunteers organised over 400 clean-ups and removed 42 tonnes of litter across the whole of Ireland.

This year, Clean Coasts' Big Beach Clean is supported by Cully and Scully and will run from September 16th to 18th. Waterford is being invited to register now to receive clean-up kits.

The initiative is an annual call to action as part of the International Coastal Clean-up which is operated internationally by Ocean Conservancy.

Communities and volunteers are invited to get involved in this worldwide science project which includes collecting the different amount and types of litter on Irish beaches.

This data is then filled in on Clean Coasts Marine Litter Data Cards and used to heighten awareness about the issue of marine litter and to highlight the magnitude of the problem.

Statistics show that the number one cause of marine litter is litter dropped in towns and cities.

Getting involved in the Big Beach Clean is a way for residents of non-coastal counties to help prevent litter from entering our waterways and seas.

Our ocean supports livelihoods as well as certain businesses, such as hospitality, tourism, and fishing.
