The WLR Granville Hotel Waterford Sports Awards Will Take Place On January 11th 2025
When one Waterford sports star will be crowned the overall WLR Hotel Granville Sports Award winner.
During 2024, 12 sports stars across Waterford were awarded monthly awards, and the overall WLR Granville Sports Award winner will be announced in The Granville Hotel Waterford on Saturday, January 11th.
We want YOU to be the 5th judge and have your say on who the overall winner should be. Your vote will make up 20% of the overall result.

Here are your monthly winners:
January - Ben Johnson (Hockey)
The hockey star scored 4 goals in the 2024 Men's FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers in Valencia in January, as Ireland booked their place at the Olympic Games in Paris this summer. Johnson was on target for his country in a 5-1 win over Ukraine, as well as in a 4-2 loss to Belgium, before Ireland rallied back to defeat South Korea 4-3 in the crucial playoff, the Waterford man firing in a crucial second goal on the day to secure Ireland’s passage to Paris.
February - Kate Veale (Athletics)
Kate won a seventh successive 3000m walk title at the National Senior Indoor Championships in Abbotstown, coming home in a personal best time of 12 minutes 27.82 seconds in doing so. The West Waterford Athletics Club star’s time was the third-fastest in the world in 2024. She has climbed the roll of honour to become one of the most successful Irish athletes of all time, winning 17 national titles and seven national indoor titles.
March - Henry de Bromhead (Horse Racing)
The Knockeen horse trainer had another tremendous Cheltenham Festival, training Slade Steel to victory in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, while Captain Guinness was successful in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. Both winners were ridden by stable jockey Rachael Blackmore, who became the first female jockey to win the Champion Chase, Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup.
April - Jack Hearn (Golf)
The Carrick-born golfer represented Ireland at the Men’s European Nations Championship in Spain, and played a key part in the winning Irish team with Sean Keeling, Matt McClean and Hugh Foley in the prestigious international tournament. Hearn, who found his feet at Tramore Golf Club, finished third in the tournament on an individual level.
May - Jack O'Donoghue (Rugby)
May saw Jack O'Donoghue become the youngest ever player to make 200 appearances for Munster - and just the 14th person in history to do so.
The Waterford man was also instrumental in their URC campaign. O'Donoghue powered over the line with a crucial try against the Lions in South Africa, whilst also playing his part in victories against Connacht, Edinburgh and Ulster
June - Thomas Barr (Athletics)
June saw Thomas play an integral role in a piece of Irish athletics history - as he powered home to a gold medal for Team Ireland at the European Athletics Championships at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome - alongside teammates Chris O’Donnell, Rhadisat Adeleke and Sharlene Mawdsley. It was the first time that any Irish athletes other than Sonia O’Sullivan had won a gold medal at the championships in 80 years - and followed on from a bronze medal achieved at the World Championships in the Bahamas in May.
July - Damien Vereker (Paracycling)
Vereker secured his qualification to the Paralympics by winning a grand haul of five medals at the National Paracycling Championships alongside his pilot Michell McLaughlin. It was a second Paralympics for the Larchville man having represented Ireland in Rio in 2016.
August - Kevin Mahony (Hurling)
Mahony was excellent throughout the course of the campaign for Ballygunner as they marched on to an outstanding twelfth consecutive Waterford Senior Hurling Championship final. He notched 3-8 from play in August, starring in victories against Dungarvan, Lismore, De La Salle and Passage.
September - Pauric Mahony (Hurling)
Mahony was the star of the show as Ballygunner blew aside Abbeyside in the County Senior Hurling Final to capture a record-breaking 11 titles in a row. The former captain was man-of-the-match on the day as he knocked over 0-11 - four of which came from play, in the 2-28 to 2-10 win. Mahony finished the championship with 1-48 across five games.
October - Katie Murray ( Ladies Football)
Murray was the star of the show as Comeragh Rangers created Ladies’ Football history - beating 42-in-a-row champions Ballymacarbry in the Waterford Senior Ladies’ Football Championship Final to clinch a first ever county crown. Murray was unplayable on the evening in question - scoring 4-0 from play as they won out 5-3 to 1-6.
Murray finished the Waterford Senior Football Championship with a whopping 10-24 from play.
November - Kelyn Cassidy (Boxing)
Kelyn Cassidy won his fourth successive National Elite Boxing Championship title in November. He beat James Whelan of Dublin Docklands 5-0 with a dominant performance in the mens' 80kg national final - securing the national title for the fourth year in a row. The bout was Cassidy's first since his narrow defeats in Olympic qualifying, with both men having gone on to win Olympic gold and silver in his weight class.
December - Conor Kilgannon (Soccer)
Conor Kilgannon scored six goals in December as Villa secured a league and cup double for the first time in their history. He scored in the 3-0 win against Tramore in the Ardagh Cup Final as well as firing a crucial goal in the FAI Junior Cup win against Newtown Rangers, before a grabbing a hattrick in the Munster Junior Cup win against Kilmallock of Limerick. Kilgannon also found the net for Waterford in their 5-0 win against Munster Senior League in the Oscar Traynor Trophy.
