Knitters and crocheters in the South East are being challenged to come together for Pride 2022.
The Knitted Together project is encouraging people to create a blanket that incorporates the colours of the Pride flag.
June has long been recognised as LGBTQ Pride month, and events are happening around Waterford to celebrate.
There are Knitted Together Community Maker Meet-Up sessions every Wednesday morning from 10:30-12pm in the Ferrybank library. These provide a space for people passionate about knitting and crochet to come together and meet other participants of the challenge.
The sessions are hosted by a Knitted Together Ambassador and will continue until June 15th.
Commenting on the project, Arts Officer with Kilkenny County Council Mary Butler said.
We are delighted to set out the details of the latest Knitted Together 2022 challenge and we are inviting people to come together to create a Pride blanket or indeed for people to create 8-inch by 8-inch squares in the Pride flag colours in order for us to put together a Pride blanket.
About Knitted Together
The Knitted Together Project has been running for the past two years, with over 230 participants during lockdowns.
During this time, roughly 4,000 squares were collected and stitched together to make over 100 blankets. These raised thousands of euros for charity.
This year is the first of the project where groups and individuals can gather together to knit and crochet without restriction.
What's knitters and crocheters need for Pride
Participants are asked to knit or crochet using double knitting yarn and 4mm crochet hooks or needles.
Those with the skills and time to create full blankets are invited to take part, along with participants who can create 8-inch squares. The squares will be stitched together to form a community blanket.
The charities that will benefit from the project this year include The Jack and Jill Foundation, Enable Ireland, Irish Cancer Society, National Council for the Blind Ireland, The Samaritans, and St. Vincent De Paul.
‘Knitted Together’ is funded by Creative Ireland. Those who wish to participate can register online and find out more here.
