Eastenders star June Brown dies aged 95

June Brown, best known for her role as Dot Cotton in EastEnders, has died at the age of 95.

Announcing her passing, the BBC said she died at her home in Surrey on Sunday with her family by her side.

In a career spanning many decades, Brown received many accolades.

In 2005, she won Best Actress at the Inside Soap Awards and received the Lifetime Achievement award at the British Soap Awards. She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2008. She was also given Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2022; both for services to drama and to charity.

In 2009, Brown was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress, making her only the second soap actress to receive the Nod, the first being Jean Alexander.

In February 2020 at the age of 93, she left Eastenders permanently.

A huge career in acting

Outside of Eastender's famous "Square," June Brown had a vast career in film, TV and theatre, with roles in television dramas The Bill and Minder, and films such as Sunday Bloody Sunday and Murder by Decree, to name but a few.

Her stage performances included playing Mrs Danvers in a touring production of Rebecca, as well as Jessie in a West End production of Calendar Girls. 

Brown was married twice, first to John Garley who died in 1957, and secondly to Robert Arnold who died in 2003. She and Arnold and had six children together, one of whom died in infancy.

She served in the Women's Royal Naval Servie during the Second World War.
