The Dunmore Badminton Club have won €5,000 in funding in the recent Texaco Support for Sport initiative.

The club were presented with a cheque which is to be used to help with the upkeep and maintenance of its St. Thomas' premises, a former church.

The Badminton Club is the overall Waterford winner and Velero Energy Limited presented the club with its prize. Velero Energy Limited are the company that markets fuel under the Texaco brand in Ireland.

This is Texaco's second year running the Support for Sport initiative, with Waterford's Wildcats Basketball Club being last year's winner.

The initiative has seen an annual fund of €130,000 which will involve €5,000 be distributed to a successful applicant from each county.

€55,000 will be divided amongst eight Gaelic football clubs and three soccer clubs. €50,000 will be shared equally amongst two basketball, two tennis, two athletics, two rowing and two cricket clubs. A further €25,000 will be divided amongst five additional clubs, those being badminton, boxing, golf, hockey and rugby.

Dunmore's Badminton Club was established in 1953. It plays an important role in the surrounding community and describes itself as ‘a friendly and social club’ that delivers badminton programmes to people of all ages and from many diverse groups.

Donncha O'Callaghan, a former Irish rugby player and broadcaster, is the Support for Sport ambassador and oversaw the adjudication process.

Applications for Texaco's Support for Sport 2023 initiative will open this Autumn.
