"Belfast" has seven Oscar nominations

"Belfast" has seven Oscar nominations

Belfast has received seven nominations for the upcoming Oscars, including Best Picture, and Best Director for Kenneth Branagh.

The film is a semi-autobiographical portrait of a working class family growing up in the Northern Ireland capital during The Troubles.

Ciarán Hinds from North Belfast is up for Best Supporting actor in the film, while Judi Dench, whose mother is from Dublin, is also nominated.

However, Monaghan's Catriona Balfe who plays the Mum, has missed out on a nod.

Belfast is also up for Best Sound, Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Song for Van Morrison's Down to Joy. 

In other Irish interest, Jessie Buckley from Kerry is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for The Lost Daughter. 

The Power of the Dog leads the way

The main contenders for the 94th Academy Awards is Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons.

The Netflix film has 12 nominations.

It is closely followed by Dune, which has 10, and West Side Story, which, along with Belfast has seven nominations.

The Oscars take place on Sunday March 27th.
